In the world of skincare, knowing how to cleanse your face properly is crucial. Not only does it help to remove dirt, oil and impurities for a more healthy-looking complexion, but it could potentially help your other skincare products work their magic.

Let’s break it down, so you can elevate your skincare routine and achieve the perfect cleanse (in our opinion, anyway...).

How to Cleanse the Face

Here's a step-by-step guide to cleansing like a pro:

Choose the Right Cleanser: Select a cleanser that suits your skin type. Whether it's a gel, foam, cream or oil, ensure it's formulated to address your specific needs.

Prep Your Skin: Start by wetting your face with lukewarm water.

Note: If the water is too hot, it could strip the skin of its natural oils, but cold water may not effectively dissolve stubborn impurities.

Apply the Cleanser: Use your fingertips to gently massage the cleanser into the skin using circular motions. Pay extra attention to areas prone to build up like the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

Note: Although this is the most popular technique, other formulas may require a different approach, so refer to your product packaging for optimal application.

Rinse Thoroughly: Use lukewarm water to rinse off the cleanser completely and make sure no residue is left behind.

Dry the Skin: Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Apply a Toner: Dispense a few drops onto a cotton pad and gently wipe this across the skin to remove any remaining residue.

Wondering how long should you cleanse your face for? A good rule of thumb is to spend at least 60 seconds massaging your cleanser into your skin. This gives sufficient time for all impurities to be broken down and removed.

How Often Should You Cleanse Your Face?

We recommend cleansing twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed.

The morning cleanse offers the opportunity to remove any sweat and oil build-up from the night before, creating a fresh canvas for your morning skincare routine.

Washing your face in the evening is crucial to remove any makeup, sunscreen, and impurities that have accumulated throughout the day. This step may help to prevent clogged pores and could allow your nighttime skincare products to penetrate more effectively.

When Should You Double Cleanse Your Face?

Double cleansing has been a popular topic in the beauty world lately, but is it necessary and when is best to do it?

We recommend double-cleansing as part of your evening routine to remove heavy makeup, sunscreen and general dirt and grime gathered throughout the day.

How to Double Cleanse the Face

Referring to a two-stage cleanse, this technique involves using two different types of cleansers consecutively, to achieve a more thorough wash.

For the first stage we recommend starting with an oil-based cleanser, as this will help to effectively dissolve any makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum that has built up on the skin. Simply apply it to dry skin and massage gently in circular motions.

Once you have thoroughly rinsed the oil cleanser away, follow with a water-based formula tailored to your skin type to help remove any remaining impurities.

Once you’ve worked that into the skin, rinse away with lukewarm water to complete your cleanse.
